FREE ‘Sublime Symmetry’ Art Workshops
Visit the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery to discover the mathematics behind the designs of William De Morgan, the celebrated Victorian Arts & Crafts designer. Showcasing over 80 magnificent works, including ceramics from The De Morgan Collection, designs on paper on loan from the V&A, plus examples from the Leicester Museums’ collection. Be inspired and then come and join us to get creative.
Families’ curator’s talk and tour at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery followed by a workshop at StudionAme. Meet at StudionAme at 1pm to walk to New Walk Museum.

Join the exhibition curator to the stories behind the pots.
Wednesday 15th Feb 2-4pm: StudionAme
All ages welcome in this workshop which follows on from the curators families tour. Learn how to paint a mandala dot design onto a stone based upon the symmetry in de Morgan’s ceramics.
Clay tiles: StudionAme
Thursday 16th Feb 10-12am
Lovely workshop for children aged 5-11 and families. Prepare a clay tile to be imprinted with pasta to create a symmetrical design based on de Morgan’s ceramics. (Clay tiles will be fired and can be collected at a later date.)
Kente cloth weaving: StudionAme
Friday 17th Feb 10-12am
Come and make a paper weaving as a family where 4 woven ‘paintings’ will be symmetrically rotated to create a single woven artwork with images or patterns drawn in marker pen.
Friday 17th Feb 2-4pm : StudionAme
Lovely workshop for children aged 6-11 and families. Inspired by de Morgan’s spirals draw your own spiral design in PVA glue and paint with fabric paints to create a batik fabric artwork (to be washed, ironed and collected from StudionAme at a later date).
Saturday 18th Feb 10-12am: StudionAme
A wonderful workshop for families or for children aged 5-11. Create your own circle weaving in wool and then create a design to be repeated in felt and applied to the surface.
De Morgan Henna Tattoos
Saturday 4th March 10-12am : StudionAme
Brilliant workshop for young people and adults where you will design your own henna tattoo inspired by de Morgan’s designs and paint on yourself or a friend
All workshops are free to residents of St Matthews. To sign up for any of these workshops please go into the St Matthews Community Centre to give your details.

If workshops specify ‘for families’ children of any age can be accommodated.
Please note there is a steep staircase to access StudionAme and there is no space for pushchairs that cannot be folded. Children must be supervised at all times by their parents or carers.
